How to: Transform Avocado Pits into Wood-Like Buttons with Bambi
Updated: Apr 30, 2025
As conscious fashion lovers, we can find exciting ways to reuse everyday items. One innovative idea is transforming avocado pits into wood-like buttons. This DIY project not only minimizes plastic waste but also adds a personal touch to your garments. Let’s explore how to elevate your wardrobe sustainably with this simple process.
Why Choose Avocado Pits?
Every year, millions of avocados are consumed, leaving behind countless pits that often end up in landfills. Instead of adding to this waste, you can give these seeds a new purpose. Avocado pits, when dried in the sun, will mimic the look and feel of wooden buttons.

Plastic Waste Statistics
Plastic waste is a significant global issue, with millions of tons generated each year. Globally, approximately 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually, with around 8 million tons entering the oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. Alarmingly, only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, while the remainder is incinerated, landfilled, or pollutes the environment. Transforming avocado pits into buttons may not have a significant impact, but if more people like us make small changes for the environment, it can inspire others as well!
Supplies You'll Need
Gather the following materials to get started with your avocado pit buttons:

Fresh avocado pits (clean and dry)
Cutting board
Safety gloves
Knife
Hole puncher
Hammer
Any stick with round end
Nail file or sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
Natural dyes or wood stain (optional)
Clear sealant or natural oil (for finishing)
Step-by-Step
Step 1: Prepare the Pits
First, after you enjoy your avocados, rinse the pits thoroughly to remove any leftover fruit. Peel the outer layer of the seed. Always wear safety gloves to protect your hand, as the pits are slippery. Use a knife and cut vertically from the split line. Cut at least 0.25 inches of thickness. It will shrink when dried in the sun later on.

Step 2: Punch Holes
Once the pits are cut, you can choose to create either two, three, or four holes based on your design. Use a pole puncher and hammer to make holes. Be gentle; the pits are easy to crack if punched too hard, and it's okay if they crack, you're practicing with me! Then use a chopstick to clear any debris in the holes.
Step 3: Shape the Buttons
Use a knife or any wood carving tools to shape the pits into buttons. Whether you go for a classic circular shape or want to get creative with custom designs, the organic texture of avocado pits will ensure that every button is unique. Spend time crafting each piece, as this is where your personality can shine through your fashion choices.

Step 4: Let Dry in The Sun
After shaping the buttons, let them sun dry for 1-2 days. You can either leave them outside in your yard or near a sunny window, and they will start drying. Remember to flip them halfway through the process.

Step 5: Sand and Smooth
After sun drying, the pits are now unrecognizable; they will become harder and wood-like, easy to sand down. Use a nail file or medium-grit sandpaper to remove rough edges. A well-sanded button not only looks better, but it also feels comfortable against your clothing. This step is vital; it can make or break the final appearance of your buttons.

Step 6: Stain or Dye (Optional)
If you want to add color, explore natural dyes or wood stains. For example, using turmeric can yield a brilliant yellow hue, while beetroot can produce a lovely pink. Make sure to choose non-toxic options if the buttons will touch your skin.
Step 7: Final Seal
After sanding the button, to protect your buttons, apply a clear sealant or a natural oil once they are dyed. I used canola oil because that's the only oil in my house. Use your finger to apply it on the buttons and a napkin/paper towel to wipe the excess off. This step keeps the buttons looking fresh and prevents cracking, extending their life. It can also enhance the finish with a glossy sheen, making your handmade creations even more appealing.

Step 8: Let Dry in The Sun to Lock in the Sealant
Almost there! Your buttons are almost ready. Let them dry in the sun for 1-2 hours, flipping halfway through to lock in the sealant, so your clothes won't get oil stains from the buttons when sewing.

Step 9: Sew Your Buttons onto Clothing
Now that your buttons are ready, it's time to attach them to your sewing projects. Whether you're making a new garment or updating an old one, avocado pit buttons are sure to draw attention. They make a perfect statement piece that emphasizes your commitment to eco-friendly fashion.
